A. Degen,<\/span> an artist Michael DeForge (Lose, Ant Colony, Leaving Richard\u2019s Valley<\/em>) says is \u201cone of the smartest and funniest cartoonists in the game,\u201d is the son of celebrated children\u2019s book illustrator, Bruce Degen (The Magic School Bus<\/em>). A. Degen was born in Brooklyn, New York. After several years in Tokyo, he now lives and works as cartoonist, illustrator and literary translator in Connecticut. He is the author of the books Mighty Star: and The Castle of the Cancatervater<\/em> and Soft X-Ray\/Mindhunters<\/em> (Koyama Press). His short comic, \u201cCrime Chime Noir,\u201d was a Best American Comics<\/em> selection.<\/p>\n

\nIN PRAISE OF A. DEGEN<\/span><\/p>\n

For all<\/span> the cacophonous action and psychedelic experiences depicted in the book, there remains a solid continuity between images, making the book incredibly fun to read. But because the contents of those images are so dense and deceptive, he also produces a book that requires\u2014and invites\u2014closer engagement.<\/p>\n

Degen has come to such an incredible, fully realized idiom, at this point he might be to \u201890s anime what Jim Woodring is to Looney Tunes type stuff.<\/p>\n

Bursting at the seams with information, if not words (barring its gloriously, deliriously verbose chapter titles), there\u2019s so much here to partake in, to parse, and to ponder over, that one scarcely knows where to begin \u2014 but for all that, by the time all is said and done, this hermetically-sealed, inventively self-referential work not only makes perfect sense, it goes the extra mile and actually imparts a genuine feeling of (oh God, here I go again) magic upon its readers.<\/p>\n
